Vukovar

Vukovar was the place where everything started for Croatia during the civil war of ’92. Some people say Tudjman sacrificed that city to raise international attention. For months, a few croatian fighters held out against an overwhelming force of serbs conscripts that had no particular will to die for a town their croatian brothers were defending every inch. In the end, some commandos took the place and what was a magnificent well preserved austro-hungarian town was only ruins when it was over. Remaining fighters were abducted, tortured and executed.

When the Serbs then attempted to take Osijek, 50km more to the West, they were repelled with heavy losses. Croatia had learned its lesson and the war wouldn’t wage on here anymore.
