Marseille. Marcel Pagnol’s city for many of his writings. It is the second largest city of France and covers a very large geographical area. Criminality seems to be high again, while the seaport activity is declining. Repeated strikes and rising costs is slowly bringing business down there to a halt. I found it less charming as in Pagnol’s books & movies but that was 100 years ago…
Indeed the district named ‘Le Panier’ is actually very typical and nice to visit. It is also said that a trip by boat to the ‘Calanques’ the little fjords along the coast are worth a view. The old port which hosts now sailing boats is nice to walk along and you shouldn’t miss the view from the ‘Bonne Mère’, the church standing high above Marseille. View is really breathtaking.
