Swayambunath
Swayambunath also known as the monkey temple is located a bit on the edge of Kathmandu and forms together with Bodnath the largest stupa to see in Nepal.
The location alone is very special, with the stupa sitting on the top of a steep hill and a huge & steep stairway leading to the top. When up there you can sense the holiness of the place and how different it is from the Hindu religion. Richly decorated, bright spot over the city, you feel that spirituality has a full new meaning when you walk across the area.
There is a tibetan village right accross the rear side of the hill that is also worth visiting. There you will encounter young monks playing football amidst the symbols of their religion. An interesting contrast to the supposed seriousness that bhuddism inspires 🙂
